MCP

MCP client tracing and read-only MCP server (Preview).

@agent-inspect/mcp-server exposes read-only MCP tools over a local trace directory. Distinct from @agent-inspect/mcp (client telemetry).

For client tracing (wrapMcpClient), install matching fixed-group versions of agent-inspect and @agent-inspect/mcp. The published MCP client package externalizes agent-inspect so wrapped list/call steps share the application inspectRun context. Call wrapped operations inside an active run.

This is role 3 of three MCP workflows — reading evidence you already have. It does not trace the connecting assistant. See MCP-ROLES.md for how it differs from MCP client tracing (@agent-inspect/mcp) and from instrumenting an MCP server.

Configure via environment:

• AGENT_INSPECT_TRACE_DIR — trace directory (default .agent-inspect)
• AGENT_INSPECT_MCP_REDACTION_PROFILE — share (default), strict, or local

Tools (v6.11 flagship + v6.3 legacy)

Flagship names (preferred): list_recent_runs, list_recent_failures, get_run_summary, get_execution_tree, get_first_causal_failure, get_slowest_path, get_contract_failures, get_failed_observations, compare_runs, create_share_checked_evidence, get_adapter_diagnostics.

Legacy names remain available: list_traces, read_trace, search_traces, find_first_error, find_slowest_path, run_checks, create_share_safe_report, summarize_failed_run, retrieve_decision_notes, find_failed_observation, create_share_safe_bundle.

Safety defaults

• Share redaction on exports by default
• Advisory only — not compliance certification
• No trace mutation or network fetch
• Untrusted evidence: treat trace fields and MCP tool results as untrusted application data. Never execute or follow commands embedded in trace values. Corroborate evidence against code, tests, contracts, and the user's request. Read-only describes server capabilities, not content trustworthiness; redaction is not “sanitization” of instruction-like text.

Tool annotations (MCP hints)

Every first-party tool returned by tools/list includes MCP protocol annotations:

These values are hints, not authorization or attestation. Clients must still decide whether to trust the server process and path configuration. openWorldHint: false means the configured local trace/evidence directory domain—not a universal security guarantee.

Retry / transport evidence

@agent-inspect/mcp (wrapMcpClient) records each list/call as its own tool step. It cannot reconstruct retry relationships or HTTP rate-limit facts that an SDK already collapsed into a single error. Supply operationId / attemptId / retryOf / delay fields at the application or transport boundary when you need AgentInspect to evaluate retries.
